It still sounds a bit dumb to me though, since the approach used by MSO 2011 with shared stuff in /Applications/MSO/ folder doesn't seem to violate the sanboxing and access rights too much.Īnyway, the idea behind trimming MSO 2016 is to select any of the apps you'll keep intact (MS Word, for example) and replace some of the folders within /Applications/MSAppName.app/Contents/ of other MS apps with simlinks to the same folders within Word. I have checked my installation (Word+Excel+PP), and Office 2011 actually stores about 340 Mb of fonts in /Library/Fonts/Microsoft, and about 900 Mb of shared frameworks etc in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/.Įvery MS Office 2016 application contains all the needed stuff within the app itself, and with a couple of tricks you can actually trim your MS Office 2016 installation to almost the same size as the same set of Office 2016 apps. It all has to do with the app sandboxing and Apple policy on how apps are supposed to behave in order to be distributed via AppStore.
